Frontline Railjam is one of the biggest, baddest and boldest railbattles there is. Kareem El Rafi is the mastermind inviting all the riders and last year was a milestone in European snowboarding, with all snowboarders trying so many new tricks. This years riders-list wasn’t announced till last week and when I saw it I couldn’t wait to see the footage shot. However, the next day Gerben (ed: Verweij) called me to ask if I wanted to come and make a video myself… ehhrr sure!
Thursday evening. Manus Skateshop was celebrating it’s 1st birthday and a lot of people came by and chilled. I planned to go home early, but obviously that didn’t happen. After picking up Rebecca in Scheveningen, the search for some greasy fastfood and dropping Nikola off at his home we couldn’t find Cees’ home. We found it 5 o’clock in the morning, 5 minutes before Gerben got there to pick us up. Just in time to throw our shit in the car and off we were!
The trip (ed: to Stockholm, Sweden) went pretty quick, even though we got some delay by being pulled over by the cops, twice, to take a piss in a bucket for a drug-test. Apparently 4 kids from the Netherlands in a golden car with blinded windows means trouble for the authorities.
After the hassle we arrived in Stockholm and checked in in our hotel. Only Gerben and I had a room so we sneaked Cees in. We were expected to attend some sort of party in a skateshop which was a bit of a strange scene. A hot miss October bouncer kept us waiting in line for 20 minutes and then asked what we were doing here. Gerben told her that he was a rider, on which she gave the cliche reply: “Oooh why didn’t you say so! Come in!”…….awesome.
Inside we saw some familiar faces; Kareem welcomed us and Wojtek (ed: Pawlusiak) was taking pictures of everybody. Later we met Marc Swoboda and saw Jed Anderson and Louie Paradis. All these guys, this contest is gonna be crazy!
The party wasn’t even started when suddenly everybody walked to a bar/club/restaurant. Here we got some nice steaks and spend way to much on just a couple of beers, damn Sweden is expensive! So, we decided that this bar was crap and chilled at Wojtek and the Swob’s (Marc Swoboda) hotel room. We had to put our 2 beds together and share it with the 3 of us, what didn’t work out so well.
Had some quick breakfast in the morning and had a look at the set-up. It was the same like last year, wich is good. Last year the competition was poppin’ so today should be good as well!!
Cees enjoying burger breakfast.
The square where everything went down.
Down to part one of what we came for: the contest. I always have a hard time describing a contest. I mean, there were good riders and they did awesome tricks. What else do I need to say?
Kareem asked if I could take pictures in stead of filming.. never did that before so here are my first snowboardpictures ever! (ed: Well done Tim!)
Louif Paradis warming up with a nosepress.
Not sure what the name of this kid is.. I think it’s Toni Kerkela.
Mike Casanova was one of the first attempting a frontboard on the doublekink during the practice session.
Heat 1 started: we’ve seen everything that we would expect. The vibe was building up and sick tricks were all over the setup. That didn’t work out for Adam Granqvist. He didn’t land his trick and crashed with his head on the edge of the stairs followed by an epileptic attack. The sight of this killed the mood and after seeing him being transported to the hospital the riders needed some time to discuss if they wanted to continue. Luckily for the crowd the show went on.
Eiki Helgason pressing the downrail.
The contest being put on hold, making space for the ambulance.
Everybody needed some time to get back in their game. In heat 2 it was Gerben and Cees’ time to shine. Gerben starting with some nice frontboards on the double downer and a 5-0 backside 180 out on the downrail.
Gerben with a 5-0 backside 180 out.
The level during this heat was high since they were competing against Jed Anderson, killing it with some bluntslide to regulars, nosepress 360’s out and cab 180 5-0’s on the doublekink.
Cees stomped a bs tailslide on the doublekink and after a few tries he landed an awesome bs180 in on the downrail.
In this heat the Helgasons where killing it as well. Bs180 reverts, stellar presses and a blunt to regular on the doublekink. Doing all their tricks switch and hardway made sure they where both in the finals.
After the second heat the judge needed some time to figure out who was going to the finals. In the meanwhile the crowd was pleased with a goodietoss, topped of with Jed Anderson giving away his pro-model snowboard. About 10 people caught the board and 15 minutes later all these kids were still fighting for it. In the end the police kicked in and brought the board back to it’s original owner, who decided that the people fighting for the board would have to decide in a game of “rock paper scissors”.
The crowd going crazy over Jed’s deck.
And the winner is this random dude!
The judges decided. Halldor and Eiki Helgason moved to the finals. Jed Anderson, Marc Swoboda, Gulli Gudmunsson and our homie Gerben Verweij also made it into the finals.
In the final the craziest tricks went down. Way too much to name them all. Among other tricks, Gerben landed a clean cab 180 5-0 and a hardway bs180 nosepress 180 out. On the doublekink Gulli landed a bs180 nosepress, which brought him the best trick on that obstacle. Halldor killed the downrail with a hardway 360 onto the downrail, getting him on stage as well. Overall winner was Eiki; Killing it with all kind of spins into the sickest presses ever and blunts on the doublekink.
Check all of this out in the video that will be online this week.
Halldor Helgason blurry frontblunt to regular.
Eiki: overall winner.
Gulli: Best Trick on Doublekink.
Halldor: Best Trick on Downrail.
After the contest it was time for a dinner at Burger King. Two burgers for the entire day should be enough to fill our stomach for a party with free booze. The party went down in one of Stockholm’s most fancy night clubs. There were about 10 entrances all for different venues, it was huge!
Apparently there was a “Bon Voyage” premier but as usual we didn’t see the movie at all. I’ve heard the movie is really good though!
Drinks were free from 23:00 till one o’clock. The whiskey was gone within 10 minutes and the beer within 20, yeah after midnight things started to get blurry.
I woke up in the hallway of our hotel at 8.30… I remember ‘Knabbel en Babbel’ kicking me out of our room. That’s all I’m allowed to say about this. Anyway, after looking for my camera for a while I saw that I took these pictures of the party.
Cees giving a shoutout on Helgasons board.
Gerben yelling at me: Can’t you see I’m talking to somebody.. Apparently nobody, not even Jed, ever listens to him..
Cees whispering his dirty secrets in Mike Casanova’s ear.
There was a rapgroup performing.
I think I started making pictures of random people here.
Gerben literally got kicked out of every party he goes to. He tried to prevent it this time by making friends with the bouncer. It didn’t work though, maybe because he stole the bouncers gloves?
Hans Ahlund on free whiskey.
Not able to take pictures anymore.
As said before expect a video of this crazy weekend soon! Oh yeah, we’ve heard that Adam is doing fine. He woke up and was talking again. He fractured his skull but everything will be fine. All the best to him! Get well soon.
